What is COVID-19 Antibody Test?

COVID-19 Antibody Test, also known as Sars-CoV-2 IgG Test, identifies the IgG antibody produced in the late stages of the COVID-19 infection and may remain in the bloodstream for months or even years after a recovery. It is NOT a diagnostic in that it cannot detect active infection; however, a positive test result does indicate the following:

Frequently Asked Questions About Covid-19 Testing

What type of antibodies are you testing?

We are initially testing for the SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies and using the methodology developed by Abbott Diagnostics, a leading US developer of testing equipment and reagents.

What are IgG antibodies?

IgG antibodies are proteins that the body produces in reaction to an infection. This test establishes the presence of these proteins in the blood called antibodies. The antibodies will only exist if the immune system has been exposed to the coronavirus. IgG antibodies are the most prevalent of the antibodies and are the ones circulating in the blood long after the infection has cleared.

On average, IgG antibodies take about 2 weeks to fully develop after the first symptoms. The presence of IgG is anticipated to indicate long-term immunity to the COVID-19 virus.

Can I trust this antibody test?

We are partnered with Abbott, a scientific and innovative company with over 130 years of experience, and a trusted reputable US brand.

The accuracy of a lab test is measured in “sensitivity” and “specificity”. Sensitivity is the test’s ability to correctly identify those with antibodies and specificity is the test’s ability to identify those without the antibodies. According to independent studies, the test provided by Abbott Diagnostics has a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 99.6% making it the most accurate COVID-19 antibody test currently available.

Is the antibody test FDA-approved?

These tests have been authorized by the FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for use by authorized laboratories. There are currently NO FDA approved SAR-CoV-2 antibody tests available.

How long does it take to get my results?

The expected turnaround time is 24 – 48 hours, from the date of receipt at the laboratory.

How is the Antibody Test different from the COVID-19 Nasal Swab Test?

The molecular COVID-19 test is a nasal swab test for symptomatic patients and is used to detect the direct presence of COVID-19. Check your local community for nasal swab testing sites.

The antibody serology test detects the body’s immune response to the infection caused by the COVID-19 virus, rather than detecting the virus itself. Antibodies are produced by the immune system after a minimum of 7 days post infection and remain positive long after the infection. Therefore, the antibody test can be used to detect a past infection with COVID-19 regardless of whether the customer had ever experienced symptoms or not.

If my report results positive, am I immune to COVID-19?

If positive to IgG, it is likely that you are no longer infectious (unless you continue to experience fever, cough, or any other flu-like symptoms). It also suggests that you harbor some level of immunity although it is still unproven if the presence of antibodies confers complete immunity and for how long.
